This study addresses determining quantity and material composition for a specific district using CityGML data. The methodology integrates multiple databases, enabling the calculation of the timeframe within which the identified building materials will be converted back into construction waste based on certain assumptions, such as renovation or demolition. With knowledge of the material composition and quantity, targeted urban mining measures can be implemented. Recycled construction waste can be used to produce new construction materials for the industry. Additionally, this research assesses whether the material cycle within the neighbourhood can be closed by reusing the recovered building materials. During the investigation of a specific district in Germany, significant potential was identified, particularly for the building material groups concrete and steel. The generated data also facilitates the estimation of “grey emissions” released during the production of the building materials present in the neighbourhood. Beyond critically examining the potential of urban mining, the results also provide specific recommendations for stakeholders along the construction value chain.
