Heavy metal pollution in rivers impacted by mining activities poses an increase to aquatic ecosystems. In the Philippines, nickel mining has intensified heavy metal pollution in river systems, leading to environmental and public health risks. The study evaluated heavy metal contamination in sediments from Mapagba (MPG), Pintatagan (PTG), and Maputi (MPT) Rivers in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental. Contamination levels of the rivers were analyzed using environmental risk indices, such as Enrichment Factor (EF), Contamination Factor (CF), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), and Pollution Load Index (PLI), with spatial distribution mapped using Surfer software. Results revealed high contamination, with Chromium (Cr) and Nickel (Ni) reaching up to 9921 mg/kg and 3232.30 mg/kg, respectively. The Igeo, CF, and PLI indices indicated severe pollution, particularly at Maputi River. These findings highlight the importance of evaluating heavy metals in sediments to understand and address the environmental impact of mining, highlighting the need for urgent remediation and ongoing monitoring to mitigate health risks and develop effective management strategies.
