What is Wellness? Health is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-beingand not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Some are born healthy and most of their lives remain healthy, some are born healthy but their health dwindles, and others may not be bestowed with genetically predetermined robust health but may lead a healthy life for years and a purposeful life. Thus, health to a great extent has to be gained and maintained with health-seeking behaviors and by discarding illness-breeding habits. Remaining healthy throughout one’s lifespan is a cognitive behavior to be pursued proactively. Wellness is defined as “an act of practicing healthy habitson a daily basis to attain better physical and mental healthoutcomes, so that instead of just surviving, one is thriving.” In our society, some always pursue wellness, while others neglect it. Wellness-seeking people have longevity. Governments of various countries have realized that investments in wellness will improve gross domestic product (GDP). The Government of India has recently launched a major program—wellness program—throughout the country. This chapter will review the aspects of wellness programs.
