Recent Trends in Injection Strategies in Scramjet Combustor: A Review

Combustion in one application differs from another by the relative importance of the various phenomena based on fuel, geometry and operating conditions. Combustion devices must be designed in such a way as to result in rapid mixing, short combustion time and stabilization of flame. Devices as such designed due to such conflicting requirements have complex flow structures with flow separation, swirl flows in addition with intense zones of recirculation and sudden pressure changes. Supersonic combustion in itself is a complex phenomenon riddled with inherent difficulties of short residence time available for fuel and air mixture. Fuel injection schemes play a pivotal role in scramjet engines which are a pioneer in supersonic combustion. An attempt has been made in the current study to put forward the recent trends in fuel injection schemes in scramjet combustor and the role played by fuel injection in proper functioning of scramjet combustor. Due diligence has been given to the prevailing scenario of fuel injection techniques to present a comprehensive summary.
