Important Features of the February 6, 2023 Earthquakes in Türkiye

On Feb. 6, 2023, a magnitude Mw7.8 earthquake struck in south-central Türkiye, followed by a magnitude Mw 7.7 event about 9 h later. The paper provides a general view of the important and relevant characteristics of the tectonics, seismicity, strong ground motion, near-fault and basin effects, liquefaction, building codes, and damages to buildings and infrastructure with appropriate references to field reports, related papers, and presentations. The financial losses and earthquake insurance applications are also encompassed. The paper further elaborates on the reasons behind extensive damages and associated casualties highlighting the non-code-compliance issue. Important findings, conclusions, and suggestions for the ways and means of reducing earthquake losses in future earthquakes are also included. The paper also provides a comprehensive reference to the investigations, studies, papers, reports, articles from the media, and presentations.
