On Feb. 6, 2023, a magnitude Mw7.8 earthquake struck in south-central Türkiye, followed by a magnitude Mw 7.7 event about 9 h later. The paper provides a general view of the important and relevant characteristics of the tectonics, seismicity, strong ground motion, near-fault and basin effects, liquefaction, building codes, and damages to buildings and infrastructure with appropriate references to field reports, related papers, and presentations. The financial losses and earthquake insurance applications are also encompassed.
