This paper argues that in order to sustain peace, interventions must address more than an end to conflict and violence. At the level of conceptual analysis, the psychosocial perspective offers a systemic and systematic approach to the conditions that would make for sustainable peace in a given context. At the level of practice, it would suggest what kinds of interventions, in what domains, administered by who, will likely have meaningful impact. It would also indicate the limitations imposed by particular contexts on the success of psychosocial interventions, an important concern given the notorious chronicity of many situations of violent conflict. Psychosocial intervention conventionally has tended to be identified narrowly with mental health and individual wellbeing. But sustaining peace calls for a more radical understanding that embraces many domains relevant to peace, yet is based on psychological principles. These points are illustrated with examples from India as well as other parts of the world.

摘要
