This chapter provides an overview of what the book is about: the varied kinds of psychosocial interventions carried out for some of the most pressing issues of contemporary social concern in India—agrarian distress, disasters, violence against women, suicide, social conflict, and socio-economic inequalities and disparities. As the term ‘psychosocial’ implies, the interventions weave together the psychological and the social. The interventions are aimed at mitigation of distress at the level of the individual. But they are informed by an understanding of the broader social structural forces and the contexts of inequalities and power imbalances that contribute to the distress, and are laced with the overarching perspectives of social justice, human rights, and inclusion. Located broadly at the tri-junction of psychology, social work, and social sciences in general, the interventions in this volume demonstrate the processes and outcomes of what has been/can be done in order to alleviate distress and enhance the psychological and social functioning and well-being of individuals.

摘要
