Potential Pharmacological and Therapeutic Components of Ixora coccinea L. for Value Added Biomaterials

Ixora coccinea Linn. (Rubiaceae) is a traditional evergreen shrub that withholds a priceless reservoir of bioactive compounds. It grows throughout most of India and Sri Lanka. The flowers, leaves, roots, and stem of the plant are utilized in Indian ethnomedicine, naturopathy, and various folk remedies to treat myriad ailments. Phytochemical analysis has revealed that this plant is composed of beneficial secondary metabolites namely Quercetin, Kaempferitin, lupeol, β-sitosterol, Stigmasterol, oleanolic acid, Epicatechin, sitosterol, ursolic acid, rutin, leucocyanadin, Ixorene, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, myricetin etc. which proves the medicinal activities of the plant. Nanocellulose extracted from I. coccinea L. has been shown to be extremely effective in wound healing due to the presence of these bioactive components. These findings support the bioconversion of the whole plant to value added biomaterials which aimed to explore its medicinal applications.
