Design of Dually Notched Compact 4-Port UWB MIMO Antenna

This paper introduces performance evaluation of a small ultra-wideband (UWB) MIMO system, specifically developed to minimize interference from two prevailing communication systems. The design incorporates four elliptical radiators arranged orthogonally on a 45 mm × 45 mm FR4 substrate, with each element fed by a microstrip feed. A defected ground structure is implemented on the other side of a substrate, ensuring ultra-wideband (UWB) characteristics and optimal impedance matching. The proposed antenna achieved sharp and narrow dual-notch band characteristics by incorporating an inverted U-shaped slot in feed line and a symmetrical L-shaped slits in ground structure within the UWB spectrum at center frequencies 5.5 and 7.5 GHz simultaneously. The proposed design features a compact size with excellent performance metrics, including an extremely low envelope correlation coefficient (ECC < 0.005), a high diversity gain (DG = 10 dB), and a total active reflection coefficient (TARC < − 7 dB), excluding the notch bands. The design is optimized using HFSS software. The MIMO design performance is assessed through several factors, including impedance matching (S-parameters), the effectiveness of the notch bands, radiation characteristics, and MIMO performance metrics.
