摘要
The terracotta temple cluster of Illambazar in Birbhum, India, stands as a testament to the rich sociocultural and ethnographical tapestry of the Bengal between the 17th and 19th centuries. This place has seen a magnificent blend of faiths and cultures, such as Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. This con glomeration of cultures has adorned the temples of Illambazar with intricate terracotta panels, reflecting not only the architectural prowess of the artisans but also serving as visual narratives of the society in which they were built. This temple cluster in a radius of 500 m is noteworthy for having distinct architectural designs. Drawing upon oral histories, engagement surveys, and archeological findings, this paper aims to contextualize the sociocultural milieu of Illambazar during the 17th to 19th centuries. It delves into the religious beliefs, artistic expressions, and daily life practices of the communities inhabiting the region, shedding light on their customs, rituals, and social hierarchies. Through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing historical analysis, oral histories, ethnographic study, and cultural examination, this research seeks to unravel the layers of meaning embedded within these structures. The present paper aims to investigate the rich artistic representations on the walls of these terracotta temples to understand the sociocultural fabric of this particular place, followed by exploring the design aesthetics of these temples considering the plan, elevation, facade design, along with examining the terracotta relief panels on the temple walls. This study further forwards an understanding of the anecdotes depicted on the walls representing the juxtaposition of different faiths, cultures, and practices. Through utilizing the intersection of sociocultural and ethnographic methodologies, this paper finally provides a more profound understanding of the significance of the Illambazar terracotta temple cluster, offering a glimpse into the collective consciousness of the community.
