Developing the ability to handwrite is a crucial and fundamental skill for effective written communication, particularly for children. In India, a large number of schools require proficient handwriting in regional scripts up until the secondary level of education. Therefore, it is important for early childhood writing instructions and assessment methods to facilitate the development of fluent writing practice in Indic scripts. This study explores the components of legibility and readability utilized by teachers for their subjective assessment of children’s handwritten Odia text. Drawing upon handwriting studies, various global-holistic and analytic handwriting assessment methods and characteristic features of Odia letterforms, typographic attributes of legibility and readability of handwriting were derived. These attributes were organized into a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire in both English and Odia. The questionnaire was distributed to 103 primary school teachers from 38 schools in Odisha, and their responses were analysed through exploratory factor analysis and descriptive statistics to extract the typographic parameters that teachers employ for teaching and evaluating the Odia handwriting of students. The paper concludes with recommendations for design-oriented teaching practices and assessment methods using the extracted parameters at the elementary and primary levels of education to enhance instruction and feedback.
