Packaging the Channapatna Toys: Employing a Product Semantics Approach
摘要
The paper investigates the application of product semantics in designing packaging for Channapatna toys, with an emphasis on user-centricity. Recognising that packaging serves as the initial point of contact between consumers and products, especially in the absence of direct interaction, the study addresses a significant gap in the literature: the role of product semantics in child-friendly toy packaging. Despite the cultural and historical significance of Channapatna toys, current packaging designs are inconsistent and fail to effectively engage their intended audience. This paper aims to bridge this gap by employing a product semantics approach, informed by Athavankar’s framework, to develop tailored packaging solutions for Channapatna toys. The research questions focus on how packaging can be designed to resonate with different user groups, particularly children and their parents. The methodology includes a thorough market analysis, literature review, and innovative user surveys, including interactive survey games for children. The findings reveal that consistent and user-informed packaging designs can significantly enhance the visual and tactile appeal of Channapatna toys, fostering a stronger connection between the product and its users. The study concludes that applying product semantics to toy packaging not only improves aesthetic and functional appeal but also increases market value and consumer engagement. This paper contributes to design research by providing a strategic framework for integrating cultural heritage with modern design principles. It offers valuable insights into creating sustainable and engaging packaging solutions, ensuring that traditional crafts reach and resonate with their intended customer base.
