Digital Archiving of Monumental Ornamentations for Use in Contemporary Design Education
摘要
This research paper studies architectural ornamentations of Hyderabad monuments as a visual language for application in design aesthetics. These architectural motifs were studied as a form of cultural history to find relevance in today’s contemporary design. The study examines the collected motifs and suggests a way to contemporize them based on elements of design for today’s application in various fields of design as a way to preserve the cultural history of Hyderabad. The visual language was analysed by collecting data on design motifs from the architectural field visits namely Charminar, Qutub Shahi Tombs, Chowmahalla Palace, Golconda Fort, and Mecca Masjid. The analysis was majorly categorised based on historical narratives, cultural relevance, and design philosophy. One such attempt has been made for use in graphic design and textile design by introducing an asset library as a plugin in design software namely Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator. The paper suggests example scenarios of how this database can be used in different fields of design. One major deliverable was design education, where a workshop was conducted for B.Design students, NIFT Hyderabad, comprising 60 participants from various design streams. The workshop encouraged the students to use the newly developed plugin in three different applications of design namely textile block printing, graphic illustrations in packaging design, and logo design making. The test case study analysed how emerging designers could use this as a visual language and the results of design patterns are tabulated. The major findings include the following: (1) motifs catalogue under three categories (2) contemporized motifs in the newly developed asset library, and (3) design patterns created using the newly developed asset library. The study signifies the findings as a new support to teach elements of design and design principles for design students, that could positively impact their learning on design aesthetics.
