Semiotics and Affective Analysis of Movie Posters: A Study on Romantic Movie Posters
摘要
Movie posters in the film industry have always remained the most important medium of mass communication and a promotional material. Well-designed movie posters can create a proper awareness, curiosity, and anticipation for the movie. The movie posters have changed its structure and composition layout over time as the audience has also evolved and become more informed and sensitive towards the visual design over time. Different movie genres have taken different approaches to establish the theme of the movie. This research aims to analyze Semiotic and affective qualities of the movie posters of different genres from 1990 to find out properties of the poster that affect the overall impact of the poster. A predefined set of semiotic ontology (Chowdhury's Semiotics Framework) derived from literature was used, and then employed to appraise movie poster designs by experts. To further gauge the emotional attributes of the movie posters in relation to their conveyed meanings, an affective evaluation was carried out using the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) test and responses were taken from audience and experts. It can be concluded that the systematic system used to evaluate the posters can be very helpful to the visual designer to design more relevant, interesting and impactful posters in future.
