The Brahmaputra Valley in Assam is home to a diverse array of tribes, each with a rich tradition of handloom textiles that reflect their cultural heritage. These textiles, adorned with intricate motifs and patterns, tell stories of religion, nature, and societal beliefs. The motifs serve as symbols of cultural identity, preserving ancient knowledge. However, the traditional art of tribal textiles is facing a gradual decline, putting this cultural heritage at risk. This research paper addresses the urgent need to preserve the tribal textile motifs of the Brahmaputra Valley through a threefold strategy. First, it advocates the use of digital methods to document the historical context and significance of each motif, creating a comprehensive cultural archive. Second, physical conservation efforts will ensure the longevity of these textiles for future generations, safeguarding both the artefacts and their stories. Lastly, to raise awareness and impart training to indigenous weavers and artisans regarding significance of preserving these motifs as cultural heritage, promoting deeper understanding and appreciation among the broader community. The study aims to halt the loss of cultural craftsmanship by establishing a robust preservation strategy, contributing to discussions on cultural heritage and sustainable development while recognizing the deep cultural significance of Assam’s handloom textiles.
