The demand for organic food products has increased drastically after the pandemic. The consumers are making informed choices for their health and wellbeing. One such example of organic product is honey and its demand has led to more farmers turning toward apiculture. While there is sufficient research focusing on the honey production and bee health, there is a gap when it comes to the risks posed by apiculture to the beekeepers. Beekeeping involves a lot of manual labor. Repetitive tasks like inspecting hives, extracting honey, and moving bee boxes can put beekeepers at high risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) due to awkward postures and heavy lifting. To properly understand the risks involved, a study was conducted to investigate beekeeping in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The study focused on hive inspection tasks due to its frequent and physically demanding nature. To analyze the ergonomic risks associated with inspection, the study used the Recognized Assessment Tool (REBA). The outcomes were alarming: the beehive inspection had a high risk score, suggesting a significant likelihood of MSDs in the arms, legs, and lower back. The study concludes that beekeeper’s health should be given equal priority with bee health in the beekeeping business. Redesigning instruments used in beekeeping, especially beehive boxes and frame handling equipment, can greatly lower ergonomic risks. In order to ensure a safe and sustainable beekeeping sector in future, research should examine ways to enhance beekeeping practices through ergonomic design solutions.
