Design Intervention to Facilitate Water-Accessing Tasks in Rural Households: Context of Elderly Women Musculoskeletal Strain

Access to clean water is crucial for human health and well-being. However, many elderly women in rural areas encounter significant challenges when performing water-related tasks due to musculoskeletal strain. This study aims to develop ergonomic design interventions tailored to the specific needs of elderly women in rural households, to alleviate the physical burdens associated with fetching and carrying water. Field research involving observation and interviews with elderly women in rural communities is conducted to gain insight into their daily routines and the challenges they face while performing water related chores. The iterative design process is utilized to develop solutions that enhance the efficiency and safety of water-accessing tasks, taking into consideration the physical capabilities and limitations of elderly women. The ultimate objective is to create interventions that can be easily adopted and maintained within rural households, thereby improving the health, independence, and quality of life of elderly women. The findings from this research not only contribute to addressing the immediate needs of elderly women in rural communities but also inform broader efforts in promoting gender- and age-sensitive design practices and advancing rural ergonomics. By recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by elderly women in accessing clean water, this study aims to foster more inclusive and sustainable solutions for rural water access.
