Home healthcare, commonly known as homecare, is the provision of healthcare services and assistance directly to individuals in their homes instead of in hospitals or other medical settings. This method has several benefits, including customized care, reduced costs, enhanced comfort, and a sense of independence for the patients. Depending on the individual’s health needs and preferences, homecare can be a valuable substitute for or supplement to institutional care. From an operational viewpoint, homecare services requires the solution of an optimization problem that combines scheduling and routing complexities. In this paper we present a mathematical programming model for a real-world homecare routing and scheduling problem, and we experimentally show how solving such a model can lead to new best-known heuristic solutions and new lower bounds for some benchmark instances available in the literature.
