To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pan-European study on farmers’ protests on the Internet in 2024. This research systematically compares digital traces from January to July 2024 in online media coverage of protests across three languages: Polish, German, and Flemish. The findings reveal significant differences in media coverage and sentiment across the three regions. Polish protests received the most attention per capita and elicited the strongest negative emotions. The study also shows that traditional media dominate Polish discourse, whereas social media play a more prominent role in German and Flemish discussions. Furthermore, the study highlights that serious topics, such as animal welfare and food security, are underrepresented in traditional media. It also underscores how the 2024 protests differ from earlier ones due to public support related to the costs of eco-transformation and the involvement of far-right political groups in the protest discourse.
