This chapter explores the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and sustainable governance in the real estate sector. The real estate sector is expected to provide strong, sustainable, and inclusive human settlements as India's demand for urban spaces is increasing rapidly. According to SDG Report 2024, India’s contribution towards building sustainable cities and communities has shown an overall downward trend. The percentage of urban residents living in slums has remained constant, while fewer people in metropolitan areas get clean water. As the Indian population continues to urbanize, the business sector may encourage sustainable urban development by utilizing CSR funds and sustainable governance. This chapter begins with mapping the relationship between the CSR targets mentioned in Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013 with SDGs, and discusses the opportunities and challenges for developing sustainable cities and communities. The chapter further includes the case studies of sustainable cities and communities built in India through CSR and the significant role of sustainable governance in providing a decent quality of life to the citizens. The chapter concludes with the author’s insight regarding the present scenario of sustainable cities and communities in India, thus giving a clear understanding to the readers.
