Assessing Effects and Impacts Associated with Macro–Micro Plastics in Waterbodies

The amount of plastic produced worldwide has increased to billions of tons every year, raising serious concerns about the environment and human health. There are currently no industrial or naturally occurring processes that can fully break down plastics into innocuous leftovers. Nearly 80% of the planet’s water, which makes up two-thirds of it, is contaminated by plastic waste. Plastic-induced water pollution is putting marine life in dangerous and terrible conditions. The primary culprits behind water body pollution are micro- and macroplastics, which not only cause various health problems but also directly endanger the natural habitation of freshwater and sea plants and animals. Recent population growth, industrial burst, and human activity have increased the need for plastics in the production of various goods, the majority of which pollute freshwater and sea environments. We have examined the three domains of solutions that can be used to combat plastic pollution and remediate plastic-induced water pollution. These include the use of cutting-edge technology to create bioplastics, the use of microorganisms to biodegrade plastics, and raising public awareness and enacting laws. Universities, research institutions, nonprofit groups, and international agencies may raise alertness in our people about the need to fight water contamination by assisting governments worldwide in developing and enforcing new laws that effectively battle plastic-induced water contamination.
