One of the significant disruptors in the real estate industry, which addressed the demand for transparency, efficiency, cost-effective transactions, and elimination of third parties [1] was the technology known as blockchain. As per a report published by PwC [2], blockchain technology has the potential to contribute around 1.76 trillion USD to the global economy by 2030, with real estate being one of the areas that adds significantly to it. This research identifies the overlap of blockchain technology in the real estate industry. This research aims to provide an overview of the topic and investigate evidence of existing literature on blockchain in the real estate industry. By identifying 139 pertinent documents from the Scopus database, a systematic literature review is conducted, followed by creating a bibliometric map using the VOSviewer tool to reveal dominant research clusters/themes in the topic. Thus, the main themes are identified and discussed in detail in the research through a thematic analysis. Through this multifaceted approach, the research seeks to (i) answer the research question “How and why blockchain technology should be used in the real estate industry” and (ii) examine the virtues and drawbacks of blockchain technology, and (iii) identify gaps in research in existing literature. Ultimately, the findings help contribute towards further directions in research of blockchain applications in real estate.

摘要
