The elbow is the focus of attention in cricket’s sister sport of baseball but is often an afterthought in cricket. This is mainly due to the illegality of ‘throwing’ (straightening the elbow) during the bowling action. Elbow injuries have not featured prominently in previous cricket injury surveillance as they are typically managed without significant time loss from playing. However, there are many cases, particularly in the men’s game, where an elbow injury has caused extended absence from the game, required surgery and sometimes forced retirement. This is especially true when the mechanism relates to fast bowling and can result in bony injury including degenerative change or stress fracture. More commonly, elbow injuries require quality management to enable a player to effectively rehabilitate and resolve their issue whilst continuing to play and perform at elite levels. This is true for batting-related ‘tennis elbow’ tendinopathy and throwing-related elbow pain and should always require consideration of training and overall workloads to achieve a successful outcome.
