This chapter extends the discussion on student motivations and expectations of TNHE through an in-depth exploration of Chinese students engaged in two TNHE programmes in China. Beginning with an introduction that sets the stage for the exploration, the author theorises student motivations using the extended push and pull theory, which provides a foundation for understanding the complex factors influencing students’ decisions to participate in TNHE. She then introduces the contexts of the two TNHE case studies and the research methods employed to explore student motivations and expectations, followed by the quantitative and qualitative findings from the two cases. This includes why students choose TNHE in China rather than studying abroad; why students choose TNHE programmes rather than studying on a local Chinese programme; and the factors at play that influence why students choose their TNHE programmes, the various sources of information they draw on in this decision-making, as well as their expectations for learning. Finally, she summarises the key insights derived from the case studies, which are essential for institutions and policymakers seeking to better cater to the needs and expectations of TNHE students.
