Methods of Open Field Cultivation of Vegetables
摘要
Vegetables are cultivated through various conventional and non-conventional methods in the world. Choosing the right cultivation method is the key for successful vegetable production. In Pakistan, vegetables are grown outdoors round the year as well as in polytunnels during winters. In open fields, vegetables are grown through various techniques including flatbeds, ridges, and raised beds depending upon the crop type, soil characteristics, and irrigation method to be used. In this chapter, different techniques of vegetable cultivation including broadcasting, dibbling, drilling, check row planting, ridge furrow planting, and raised bed planting under open field conditions are discussed. Each method is further described for its suitability and limitations for specific crop and growing conditions. In developed countries, experiments have also been conducted to grow vegetables in soilless media in outdoor environments due to the unavailability of suitable land as well as producing organic vegetables using organic growing media.
