Starting with a short story which depicts the author’s first visit to Xicun Village, this chapter explores the mixed permutation of two types of relationship—the personal and the public relationship. The definition of personal relationships and public relationships, the uniformity of contradiction under the two relationships, parlaying personal relationships in managing public affairs, extending personal relationships into the public sphere, the new patron-client relationship and potential problems are discussed in detail in this chapter.
