In 1356, when the Yuan Dynasty declined, Zhu Yuanzhang captured Jiqinglu (also known as Jiankang), the capital of the Six Dynasties, and changed its name to Yingtian Prefecture. Jiankang, previously known as Nanjing, had been the capital of the Song Dynasty. Upon ascending to the throne, Zhu shared the belief of Xiang Yu, overlord of Chu, that an emperor should display his authority and distinction extravagantly in front of his fellow townsmen. Therefore, he decided to build a palace in his hometown. Linhao (now Fengyang in Anhui Province), Zhu’s hometown, was strategically located with the Yangtze River in front and the Huaihe River behind.
