During the later years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, regional separatist forces began to rise, eventually evolving into a situation where the three kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu stood strong. In 263 AD, Shu was defeated by Wei. Two years later, the Sima clan usurped Wei and founded Jin Dynasty. The year 280 AD marked the end of the divided state when Jin defeated Wu, resulting in what is now known as the Western Jin Dynasty. Due to years of warfare, the central plains suffered from abandoned lands and a sparse population.
