Member states of the WHO Africa Region have made a substantial progress in strengthening national pharmacovigilance systems. Participation in the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring and improving maturity of national medicines regulatory authorities (NMRAs) bear witness for this. However, NMRA mandate and expertise vary not only between countries but also across product categories covered by national pharmacovigilance systems. Domestic investments, regional and international assistance projects should prioritise bridging existing gaps by focusing their efforts on product categories left behind.
