Zinc: Uptake, Toxicity, and Tolerance in Crop Plants and Management of Zn-Contaminated Soil

Micronutrients play a very important role in the growth and development of crop plants as well as zinc (Zn) is one of them. However, optimum concentration of Zn is very essential for the metabolism of plants because both deficiency and excess amount of Zn may result in adverse effects on plant health and crop productivity. During this present chapter, an attempt has been made to elaborate on the mechanistic understanding of Zn absorption from the soil, with special reference to the role of transporter proteins such as ZIP (Zinc-Iron Permease) family and factors governing Zn availability in the soil. These include explorations on the effect of Zn toxicity on physiological and molecular processes that highlighted the presence of apparent visible symptoms of toxicity and the disturbance caused by the excess Zn on the metabolic processes of the plant. In addition, emphasis has been drawn to effective management practices to treat Zn-contaminated soils, which are very crucial for sustainable agriculture. Altogether, this chapter would illustrate aims at providing detailed understanding roles of Zn in agriculture and provides practical solutions for management of Zn deficiencies and toxicities, leading towards enhanced crop productivity and food security for the nation.
