Managing Defense Mechanisms in Crop Plants Using Phytohormones Under Various Contaminants

Exposure of crop plants to broad spectrum of environmental contaminants such as drought, salinity, heavy metals, pesticides, and nanoparticles can impact their growth and productivity. Phytohormones play a crucial role in regulating plant defense mechanism during stress condition. The present chapter offers a comprehensive examination of several phytohormones such as auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, ethylene, and brassinosteroids, addressing their role in processes like seed germination, flowering, fruit ripening, and stress resilience. Further, the link between phytohormones and environmental forces is also explored, emphasizing how these relationship influence plant physiology under stress conditions. This chapter explores the application of phytohormones within contemporary plant biotechnology, emphasizing the enhancement of crops and the augmentation of stress resilience, while underscoring the opportunities to leverage hormonal pathways for the sustainability of agriculture. Researchers and practitioners can gain insights into the mechanisms through which phytohormones operate and their interrelations, thereby facilitating the development of innovative strategies to increase plant resistance and productivity.
