Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a standard therapy for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, CPAP acceptance and adherence have been reported to be unsatisfactory. Although various strategies to improve CPAP adherence have been studied, a certain number of patients are intolerant or refuse CPAP treatment. Thus, currently, developments of alternative therapies for CPAP have been a hot topic including pharmacological and implantable therapies. In this chapter, the latter is focused on and introduces hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) which is a current clinically available therapy.
