ASEAN has various electricity generation technologies available to achieve its net zero transition by 2050. This study examines the role of cross-border power trade in helping ASEAN achieve this goal. It presents the following perspectives. First, when emissions are capped at the 2030 level, emissions from cross-border power trade appear to be relatively lower than those where there is no such trade. Second, the initial phase of cross-border power trade appears to be correlated with a decrease in total capacity, but as this trade increases, total capacity increases while total system cost decreases. Third, solar PV appears to be the key driver for achieving the net zero transition by 2050; hydropower is second. Fourth, total system cost appears to decrease when more cross-border power trade is allowed. Fifth, when more cross-border power trade is allowed, solar PV and hydropower appear to replace natural gas.
