The exponential development of Gen AI over the past few years has the potential to radically transform the higher education and employment sectors in ways that are hard to anticipate or even imagine. It raises complex ethical concerns on whether this will enhance autonomy and creativity in learning or compromise academic integrity and undermine fairness and equity in access to education. This chapter begins with a review of current debates and emerging perspectives on the ethics of Gen AI in education from around the world. It will also explore the discussions in Aotearoa NZ about ethics of Gen AI through a te ao Māori (Māori worldview) lens. The potential impacts of Gen AI on meeting Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitment to partnership and obligations to protect and enhance Māori educational achievement will also be considered. This is followed by an evaluation of how these perspectives apply in the context of VET where there are industry/sector-specific imperatives to prepare students to be AI literate.
