The phenomenon of rapid urbanization is a pervasive and continuing challenge in our modern world. It entails the rapid growth and extension of metropolitan centers, encroaching upon previously underdeveloped regions. This process frequently leads to the unfortunate consequence of diminishing the extent of valuable land cover. The phenomenon of urban sprawl poses a significant threat not only to the preservation of the natural environment but also to the delicate ecological equilibrium of peri-urban areas. Peri-urban zones, due to their close vicinity to urban centers, serve a vital function in minimizing the negative consequences of urban expansion and present a potential avenue for harmonizing urban growth with the preservation of green and natural environments. Peri-urban open spaces possess the capacity to function as significant buffers that can safeguard natural ecosystems, offer recreational prospects, and contribute to the holistic welfare of urban inhabitants. This chapter explores the comprehensive range of planning strategies established in the current body of literature on peri-urban settings. The study examines a wide range of strategies, including the implementation of green infrastructure and the establishment of zoning regulations that prioritize ecosystem services. The chapter aims to advance the understanding of spatial sustainability, promote the adoption of nature-based solutions in peri-urban areas and emphasize the significance of flexible strategies that can accommodate the distinct attributes of peri-urban regions at various topographical scales, local contexts, and implementation. The chapter will assess planning interventions to ascertain their pertinence within the complex landscape of peri-urban areas and highlight the importance of using adaptable and situation-sensitive strategies to effectively tackle the challenges presented by the peri-urbanization of Varanasi. The chosen urban area serves as a case study to exemplify the application of specific planning principles, by studying the feasibility of implementing selected interventions from literature in the peri-urban regions of Varanasi and considering the unique attributes, challenges, and potentialities of the city. The study demonstrates the feasibility of formulating planning strategies and interventions for peri-urban open spaces in the context of Varanasi by evaluating the possibilities for comparable actions.

摘要
