The convergence of energy conservation, sustainable water management, and multifaceted environmental protection poses critical challenges globally. As populations grow and economies expand, the demand for energy escalates, placing immense strain on traditional fossil fuel resources. Biomass, a renewable source derived from organic matter, offers a compelling solution. It reduces waste disposal burdens, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and provides an avenue for decentralized energy generation. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a cornerstone technology for transforming biomass into biogas – a versatile fuel composed primarily of methane and carbon dioxide. This biological process occurs in oxygen-deficient environments, where microorganisms break down complex organic materials into simpler compounds. Biogas presents notable advantages, including utilization for heating, electricity production, or conversion into transportation fuels. This paper investigates the production of biogas through anaerobic digestion, emphasizing its role in fostering sustainable energy practices. It examines the suitability of diverse biomass feedstocks, the impact of pre-treatment techniques, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies aimed at maximizing biogas yields. The goal is to underscore the significance of this process in advancing both environmental sustainability and energy security.
