Culture, due to its holistic, practical, structural, intermediary, and political nature, has become the theme, method, and goal of contemporary philosophy, so contemporary philosophy is basically a cultural philosophy (Ouyang, Q. To a certain extent, philosophy can be regarded as the result of culture, and culture will certainly give birth to its corresponding philosophy, which is the generalization, inheritance, development, and transcendence of its “mother” culture. A Dictionary of Chinese Language is a cultural encyclopedia covering Chinese literature, history, geography, religion, philosophy, science and technology, and local customs. Chinese culture spread to the Western world through A Dictionary of the Chinese Language. The examination of the translation of Chinese culture in A Dictionary of the Chinese Language provides insights into Chinese philosophical thoughts introduced in the dictionary. While compiling the dictionary, Morrison extensively referenced and incorporated Chinese classics, particularly internalizing the dominant Confucian philosophical thinking in Chinese history, which became the source of his citations and explanations. Translating traditional Chinese into foreign languages is an inevitable path for Chinese culture to go global. In the process of compiling A Dictionary of the Chinese Language, the mutual understanding, integration, mutual aggression, and rejection between Chinese and Western cultures reveal the significant roles played by the translator’s language perspective, cultural perspective, translation perspective, and ideology in the translation process. This chapter explores the complex translation activity of Chinese culture in Morrison’s compilation of A Dictionary of the Chinese Language from three aspects: the selection of materials for translation, the background of translation, and the motivations behind translation. It looks at the translation of traditional Chinese culture from the perspective of a foreign translator, aiming to provide intellectual support for the cross-cultural Spreading of Chinese civilization in the context of the new era.
