The systematic evolution of ancient Chinese legal classics has a strong continuity, starting from the Canon of Laws of the Warring States Period to the Ta Tsing Leu Lee of over two thousand years later, and its systematic legislation technology was constantly improved. The stable value concept and the continuous improvement of legislation technology have created the highly legal civilization of ancient legal classics, which has become the symbol of the Chinese legal system. Qing Dynasty is the last unified absolute monarchy in China, and its national code The Great Qing Legal Code (also known as another translated version Ta Tsing Leu Lee), carrying rich connotations, inherited the legal tradition of China for thousands of years. This code can be regarded as the crystallization of ancient judicial culture and cultural tradition. In 1810, George Thomas Staunton translated the Ta Tsing Leu Lee into English and published it in London, which was the first time for Westerners to see the complete ancient Chinese code, and thus they had a direct understanding of the specific legal provisions of ancient China. From then on, Westerners’ understanding and study of Chinese law have entered a new stage, representing a peak of Chinese culture spreading to the West since Ming and Qing Dynasties. In this chapter, we mainly introduce the inheritance and innovation of the Ta Tsing Leu Lee to the traditional Chinese legal culture, including the purpose of the English translation of the Ta Tsing Leu Lee and the story behind it, as well as the value of its English translation and its impact on the exchange of Chinese and Western legal civilizations.

In ancient China, the special geographical location and the development process of legal civilization determined that the ancient people created a unique set of complex and detailed legal system in the long history. Since Qin and Han Dynasties, China has formed a legal governance society.
