Feed shortage during the dry season is an important factor limiting livestock production in tropical regions such as Africa. To address this problem, several African countries are increasingly adopting silage and TMR fermentation technology to improve the efficiency of feed resource utilization and promote livestock production. Tropical forage and crop straw are important feed resources in Africa, known for their high biomass production capacity. They have enormous production potential as raw materials for silage. Effectively utilizing local feed resources to produce high-quality silage that can be stored for extended periods is crucial for alleviating feed shortages and promoting sustainable development of animal husbandry in Africa. This chapter focuses on the overview of feed resources, silage production, and livestock raising in the African region.
