Study on the Mechanical Properties of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) Prepared with Coal Gangue Sand

Against the backdrop of China's major strategic decision on the “dual carbon” goals, addressing the large accumulation of coal gangue and the shortage of construction sand is an urgent issue. To achieve high-value resource utilization of coal gangue, this study uses 100% calcined coal gangue sand to replace quartz sand in traditional ECC to prepare Coal Gangue sand Engineered Cementitious Composites (CGECC). The uniaxial tensile and compressive properties of CGECC were tested. The results show that the tensile strength and peak tensile strain of CGECC range from 3.45–4.56 MPa and 0.65%–1.85%, respectively, with the tensile performance being significantly influenced by aggregate size. The compressive strength reach up to 52.9 MPa. Compared to quartz sand ECC, CGECC exhibits higher tensile strength, ductility, slightly lower compressive strength, but significantly superior compressive toughness and crack development behavior.
