Policies serve as a crucial roadmap, guided by recommendations, to undertake a multitude of projects aimed at uplifting the vulnerable and marginalised segments of society. Good policies ensure the culmination of equality through the processes that promote equity. Thus, these policies try to bring vicissitudes of social strata on the same plane in terms of opportunities, economic sustainability, and upliftment in terms of better livelihood. Concerns regarding agricultural sustainability are to be seriously taken into consideration while framing the policies in the backdrop of ever accelerating rate of climate change since the last decade. Sustainability is an umbrella term with numerous issues under it which need to be addressed but most of the policies fail to integrate or harmonise the various sustainability issues (Streimikis J, Baležentis T. Sustain Dev 28(6):1702–1712. https://doi.org/10.1002/sd.2118 , 2020). Policymakers focus on one or few issues overlooking the cruciality of the other issues. This makes the validation of the strength of the policies to channel the resources at the right target even more questionable. Food production should be operated in a planet-friendly manner on the side while taking care to not overstep into the environmental arena, which may lead to accelerated climate change. Thus, a delicate balance between ecological preservation and food production needs to be maintained. A robust policymaking process may be required to culminate this ideology. In this article, an attempt has been made not only to comprehend the importance but also to devise a method for the integration and mainstreaming of the concept of sustainability and climate change into agricultural policymaking. It further attempts to answer the question of the importance of sustainable agricultural practices in combating climate change and how this can be achieved in the Indian context through devising a novel policymaking approach.
