Gas absorption is a mass transfer unit operation extensively applied in the chemical industry. During absorption, a gas mixture is brought into contact with a liquid to dissolve one or more constituents (solute) into the liquid (solvent). The rate of absorption of the solute from the gas mixture through the gas–liquid boundary (interface) is controlled by the diffusion rate. “Desorption” or “stripping” is the reverse of absorption. Mass moves in the reverse direction during desorption, also known as stripping, from the liquid phase to the gas phase. Both principles are similar and are often integrated into a system to separate the solute from an incoming gas mixture by absorption in a solvent and then recovering that solute in a more concentrated form from the loaded solvent for further use.
