This chapter considers the emotional power and resonances of the newsroom in the media building. Based on what Karin Wahl-Jorgensen has termed “the emotional turn” in journalism studies, it discusses the range of emotions experienced by journalists in the newsroom setting. Based on a series of in-depth interviews with current and former journalists who worked in British newsrooms during the twentieth and twenty-first, this chapter focusses on how emotions were managed in broadcast and multimedia (print and online) newsrooms and how they often dictated and impacted on both professional and personal relationships. A particular point of focus is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As this chapter demonstrates, the pandemic, and the accompanying loss of access to the newsroom, was a major cause of psychological stress and emotional pressure for many journalists.

摘要
