This chapter explores the impact of natural disasters on media buildings and media infrastructure through a case study analysis of Kantipur Publications in Nepal. Established in 1993, Kantipur Publications is a media firm based in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu. Its two largest daily publications, the Nepali language Kantipur and English-language Kathmandu Post, account for more than forty per cent of the total daily circulation for newspapers in Nepal. Kantipur, like other Nepalese media outlets, was significantly impacted by the Gorkha earthquake that devastated hundreds of communities across South and East Asia in the Spring of 2015. Drawing from data and narratives both preceding and succeeding the Gorkha earthquake, this chapter explores how the disaster shaped Kantipur’s use of physical space and the emergence of new journalistic practices within its newsrooms. In doing so, it offers an innovative exploration of the intricate relationship between architecture, disaster, newsrooms, and journalism culture.
