Bioremediation is the process of reducing pollutant complexity by biodegradation. Biodegradation is a general word that includes almost any biologically driven substrate change. Microorganisms are vital for the process of bioremediation, which occurs when microbes interact in their natural habitat under ideal parameters. The usage of biofilms, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bioaccumulation, and biosorption are some of the latest technological developments in microbial bioremediation. Many microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, yeast, and microalgae, biotransform, break down, or degrade various pollutants. However, controlling and optimizing bioremediation is a difficult process that depends on biotic and abiotic variables. An overview of the many forms of bioremediation, the kinds of bacteria connected to bioremediation, and the variables impacting the remediation process are given in this chapter. The employment of microbes for bioremediation of contaminated soil, pesticides, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, antibiotics, dyes, radioactive wastes, etc., has been explained in detail from the perspective of sustainable environmental management.
