Technological revolutions have always been accompanied by times of crisis. Signs of upheaval can be seen both preceding and following major technological advances. While innovations often address existing challenges, they inevitably introduce new ones as well. In recent years, discussions surrounding youth and technological progress have been both optimistic and pessimistic. Tapscott (1997), for instance, characterizes the Net Generation as the primary beneficiaries of the information age, who learn, work, and communicate differently than the older ones, and this results in better information acquisition and problem-solving ability. In contrast, Haidt (2024) and other critics offer a bleaker perspective, according to which although young people use technology a lot, it may not develop real skills and may even be harmful to them. The same developments that Tapscott sees as empowering are seen by others as detrimental. At the centre of today’s technological change is artificial intelligence (AI). Readily available AI tools have opened up possibilities that seemed impossible just a few years ago. AI can help with notetaking, creating presentations and solving maths problems— - but these are just a few examples of its capabilities. AI-driven solutions are now deeply embedded in everyday life and enable countless applications. In this article, we want to analyse the future prospects of young people. To what extent do their views reflect fears about technological progress, the unpredictability of AI and its wider impact on society?
