Study on the Applicability of AI as a Tool for Learning Programming in Engineering Studies

Generative AI has been used as a tool for helping master engineering students to code by using different software. The methodology has been applied in a course belonging to the first year of a master energy engineering degree. In the course, the students had to perform different tasks in Excel, RStudio, MATLAB or 3D design software where they were recommended to use ChatGPT in case they needed. Some of the assignments where accomplished in groups and some others, individually. In all the group activities, students fulfilled a table where they declared the degree of contribution in every subtask, including how much was done by using chatGPT. The students also answered a survey that covered different aspects such as use of AI, previous experience in software/programming, satisfaction on the team works, etc. The results seem to indicate that most students have used AI for generating text for reports and code for programming scripts. Mostly, they consider it a useful tool with certain limitations when the questions addressed to the program are too generic. The declaration of contribution showed that the participation of every member of the groups in the different subtasks was equally shared except in one group in one of the assignments. All students declared they have improved their software skill after completing the course. The results suggest the usefulness of AI as a learning tool through the resolution of doubts outside the lecture hall.
