Shading Coefficient of Tropical Climbing Plants for Indirect Green Façade

A passive design technique to lessen heat transfer via building envelopes is the use of shading devices. The overall thermal transfer value (OTTV) can be used to evaluate how effective shading devices are. However, the lack of information on shading coefficient (SC) values prevents the application of OTTV computations to vertical greenery systems (VGS). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the SC of seven tropical climbing plants that have been selected for application on the indirect green façade (IGF). The SC value was established using seven units of small-scale IGFs. Thunbergia grandiflora (TG) was the most efficient climber with a low value SC (0.38). Large, dense leaves from TG provide excellent coverage and benefits in OTTV calculation, making it the best option for a green facade because it requires minimal maintenance and provides the most shade.
