Sometime around 2019, the construction of the Philippine’s very first subway project, named the Metro Manila Subway, began. The subway project is still an ongoing project under the current administration as of this writing. However, considering the geographical location of the project, a densely populated, highly urbanized metro, the risk of its execution is relatively high. Although the project is a welcomed development in the community, it is fundamental to safeguard and ensure the safety and welfare of the stakeholders in this project. Safety, as we know, should not be looked at as a “size fits all” concept but rather as one that requires dynamic and proactive implementation. Quantitative research was conducted to determine the factors that play a big role in the safety management for this type of project. It employed the safety measures and guidelines implemented by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) amongst safety officers and workers stationed at three (3) construction sites namely Quezon Avenue, East Avenue, and, Ortigas and Shaw Boulevard stations. The data shall serve as a baseline for the development of safety management and practices specific to subway construction in the Philippines. The results showed that among the respondents, they responded positively to the questionnaire developed specifically for Construction Health and Safety Program (CHSP) by DOLE and safety climatic guidelines. The overall positive results proved that the safety management for this project has covered and met the requirements of DOLE. While the researchers failed to secure the details of the contract for safety management, indirectly, it can be proved that the contract between the Philippine government and the contractors provided a proportionate budget for safety.
