Analysis of Carbon Footprint in the Indonesian Aviation Industry, Case Study: Juanda International Airport

The carbon footprint in the aviation industry includes greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from the life cycle of flight operations. This study will focus on analyzing direct emissions that occur during the cruise phase of flights, where emissions are not easily absorbed by plants or the oceans on the Earth’s surface. The environmental impact of the aviation industry is a significant concern due to its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change. Flight data is collected from the Flightradar 24 database. The carbon footprint being analyzed pertains to domestic flights at Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya. The routes analyzed are domestic flights between provincial capitals operating with aircraft types at flight levels above 10,000 m. The method for calculating emissions uses the ICAO. Fuel consumption is assumed to use Jet-A1 fuel, which is used by commercial aircraft in Indonesia. Variables and data include flight routes, distances, aircraft types, cruising altitudes, and the number of routes from 34 airports in Indonesia. Emission estimates are based on flight movements from 2018, and predictions of aircraft emissions are calculated up to the year 2050, where the net zero emission target is set. The analysis results indicate that the carbon footprint of domestic flights at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya in 2018 was 2.3 million tons of CO2-e, with an average carbon footprint for passengers at Juanda Airport ranging from 119 to 153 kg CO2-e per person.
